Can I still afford a 1BR in Toronto? It's tough out here!

Just lost a bidding war where the rent jumped to $300 over asking. How is anyone affording these $2400 1BR apartments? I've been searching for 3 months and applied to over 40 places with no luck. The Toronto rental market feels broken beyond repair.
