Challenges with Landlord References as an International Student

I'm an international student in Toronto and I’m feeling anxious about securing a rental. I’ve heard that a bad reference from a previous landlord could hurt my application, but I’m unsure how to address this. Are there ways to explain my situation to potential landlords?
