Need advice on rent prices in East York?

Hi everyone! I'm moving to Toronto for school and considering East York, but I'm seeing listings from $1500 to $2200 for 1-bedroom apartments. Is this normal? Any thoughts on living in that area, and what should I be cautious about as a first-time renter? Thanks!
