How much do you value transit convenience over rent?

I'm moving to Toronto next month, and I'm torn between finding a cheaper place in a quieter area versus being close to the subway. I've heard that the lines can get really packed at rush hour, but I also don't want to spend a fortune on rent. How do you balance these factors?
