Is renters insurance mandatory for my new Kensington Market lease?

I just signed a lease for a one-bedroom in Kensington Market, and my landlord is insisting on renters insurance. Is it actually mandatory in Ontario? Also, what are the typical costs for this type of insurance? Just trying to budget my expenses for this new place. Thanks!
