Roommate struggles: Are these requests normal?

My landlord just asked me for a security deposit that's three months' rent! Is that common practice in Toronto? Also, how do you guys handle odd roommate habits? One of mine brings friends over at 2 AM every weekend—am I overreacting or is this just part of the package?
