Is there a perfect balance for rent and transit access?

I've been scouring 1-bedroom places in the city, and it feels like I either get a great apartment or a decent commute, but not both. Living near the subway line sounds ideal, but some locations are just ridiculously priced! How do you all balance rent with transit convenience?
