Worried about illegal basement apartments and safety issues

I'm living in a basement apartment that I suspect might not have the proper permits. I've seen signs of water damage and there are no emergency exits. It's really concerning! How can I verify if my landlord is licensed? What are some red flags I should be aware of? Any advice would be appreciated!
