Sick of rental bidding wars and losing to higher offers!

The rental market in Toronto feels like an auction gone wrong! I've lost out on several great places because I wasn't ready to throw crazy amounts of cash. How do you even decide how high to bid without going broke? Anyone have strategies to navigate this madness? I'm at a loss!
