Is it standard for landlords to ask for employment letters?

I'm currently dealing with my landlord in Toronto, and they've requested my employment letter and recent bank statements. Is this a normal part of the renting process here? Just want to know if I should be concerned or if it's standard practice for landlords to ask for this kind of information.
