How far is too far from the subway?

I've been looking at apartments in Toronto, but I can't figure out how far is too far from the subway. I’ve heard some people say a 10-minute walk is okay, but I’m worried about winter weather. Anyone have tips on what to aim for to keep the commute manageable?
