Need advice on renters insurance for my downtown Toronto apartment

Hey everyone! My landlord in the St. Lawrence Market area is asking for proof of renters insurance before I move in, but I’m not sure if it's mandatory in Ontario or just their policy. Also, what’s the typical cost for renters insurance in Toronto? Would love to hear your experiences!
