Is it normal for landlords to ask for employment letters?

Hey everyone, I'm new to renting in Toronto and recently applied for an apartment in Leslieville. The landlord wants an employment letter or recent bank statements. Is this standard practice? Should I be concerned? Looking for some advice from those who have been through this before!
