Winter heating woes or summer AC tips?

I'm thinking about subletting during the winter but concerned about heating issues and costs. How do others handle heating their apartments efficiently? Also, is it common for landlords to cover snow removal, or is that on the tenant? Any insights on seasonal moves are appreciated!
