Clarification Needed on Last Month's Rent and Deposits

I'm feeling really uneasy about the deposit situation with my landlord. They asked for last month's rent plus a key deposit, but it seems excessive to me. Is there a legal limit on how much a landlord can ask for upfront? I'm worried about how hard it will be to get it back.
