Confused about assignment vs subletting options?

I'm trying to figure out the difference between assignment and subletting my rental in Toronto. If I want to permanently leave and get out of my lease early, which option is better? What are the landlord approval requirements for each? Also, how do I ensure compatibility with future roommates?
