Are these deposit requests even legal?

Why is my landlord demanding an employment letter or bank statements? Isn't that a bit suspect? What about those pet or damage deposits—are they allowed to ask for those separately? These charges seem questionable; I’m not sure they're actually legal in Ontario. Can someone clarify?
