Is renters insurance in Toronto really worth the cost?

As an international student, I'm wondering if renters insurance is actually worth the money here in Toronto. I’ve heard about cheaper options, but do landlords typically require it? What does this insurance cover, and have any of you had claims experiences that might help me decide?
