Subletting Rights Confusion - What Can Landlords Really Do?

I'm really confused about my rights regarding subletting in Toronto. My landlord just denied my request to sublet my apartment, and I'm unsure if they can do that. Also, what about Airbnb rentals? Isn't there a legal process for these things? I just want to understand what's allowed.
