Need advice on affordable rentals near U of T for winter

I'm a grad student starting in January and looking for an affordable place near the University of Toronto. Any tips on neighborhoods with good transit access? Also, how do I find a compatible roommate? I've been seeing listings around $1,800–$2,200, but I’m worried about costs. Help!
