Can't afford to live in the city I was born in

My rent just jumped from $1800 to $2600 at renewal, and now I can't even find anything under $2000. The average 1BR in Toronto is $2400! How is anyone affording rent in Toronto anymore? This market feels broken beyond repair, and I'm starting to feel like a stranger in my own city.
