Security deposits: What can landlords legally charge in Ontario?

I'm looking for an apartment near a TTC subway line, and I've heard mixed things about security deposits. Can landlords ask for them in Ontario? What are the legal limits on security deposits, and how can I ensure I get it back at the end of my lease?
