How do you balance rent with transit accessibility?

I’ve been looking at places in downtown Toronto, but some rent prices are astronomical. Do you think it’s worth it to pay a premium for a place that’s right next to the subway? I’ve been burned before by long commutes, but trading space for convenience feels like a hard choice.
