How crucial is subway access when renting in Toronto?

I'm new to Toronto and trying to figure out how much subway access impacts living decisions. If I find a place that's a 15-minute walk to the subway, is that considered too far? I’ve heard commuting can be a nightmare here, so just trying to gauge where I should focus my search.
