What's up with Kensington Market's rental prices?

I've been hearing a lot about rent hikes in Kensington Market lately. It's such a vibrant area with all the culture and food, but are landlords really allowed to raise rents that much? Anyone else feeling the pinch? Would love to hear your experiences or thoughts on what's happening there!
