Is this normal for my Toronto neighborhood?

I've recently noticed some strange things in my building and neighborhood. There have been a few break-ins reported nearby, and I keep hearing about bike thefts. My landlord wants to install extra locks on all the doors, but is that really necessary? Should I be worried?
