Can Landlords Really Deny Subletting? Confused About My Rights

I'm really unsure about the rules around subletting in Toronto. My landlord is saying I can't sublet, but I thought tenants had the right to do so under certain conditions? Also, what's the deal with Airbnb restrictions? This whole assignment of lease thing is really puzzling me.
