Subletting Rights Question - Confused Tenant

Hi there! I'm really confused about my rights regarding subletting in Toronto. My landlord just denied my request, but I thought tenants could sublet under certain conditions? I’m worried about roommate compatibility, costs, and I heard Airbnb might have restrictions too. Can anyone clarify? Thanks!
