Are these deposit charges even legal?

I've been hearing about landlords demanding all sorts of deposits—pet fees, damage deposits, and even key deposits. But are these really allowed? I find it hard to believe that some landlords aren't just trying to squeeze extra money from tenants. Can anyone clarify what's actually legal?
