Questioning Legality of Recent Rent Increase in Toronto

I just moved to Toronto and was hit with a rent increase that seems too steep. I’ve heard about guideline increases and that anything above that might be illegal. How can I find out if my rent hike is fair or if there's a way to challenge it? I’m really worried about making ends meet in this city.
