Average 1BR rent hits $2400 - How is this sustainable?

I'm shocked to see the average rent for a 1-bedroom in Toronto reach $2400 this year. Just last year, I was paying $1800. With all the associated costs, like $200 for utilities and application fees adding up, how is anyone supposed to afford living here anymore?
