Is renters insurance mandatory in Toronto for tenants?

I'm currently renting in Toronto, and my landlord is requiring me to get renters insurance. I'm wondering if this is actually mandatory under Ontario law, and if so, what are the typical costs associated with it? Any insights on tenant rights regarding this would be appreciated!
