Confused About Rental References for First Apartment?

I'm applying for my first apartment but I've never rented before and I'm unsure who can be a reference. Do landlords typically ask for an employer reference or is it better to provide a personal one? Also, how much does parking usually add to monthly rent in Toronto? Any advice would help!
