Is Scarborough really that far from downtown?

Does anyone here regularly commute from Scarborough to downtown Toronto? I've heard mixed things about the travel times and transit options. Sometimes it feels like I’m wasting my life on subway transfers when I could be living somewhere a little more affordable.
