How important is transit access when downsizing?

As an empty nester, I'm considering a move to a smaller condo. But honestly, I'm worried about being far from transit. I love the idea of a downtown lifestyle, but hearing stories about long commutes makes me hesitate. How far is too far from the subway for you?
