First time renting in Toronto - where to start in December?

Hey everyone! I'm moving to Toronto next month and this will be my first time renting. I'm particularly interested in the Junction or Roncesvalles area. What should I expect in terms of deposits and lease lengths? Any tips on viewing apartments in winter? Really appreciate your help!
