What's the Dawes Rd area like? Considering moving there.

I'm looking to downsize now that the kids have moved out and I'm considering the Dawes Rd area in Toronto. I've heard mixed reviews but would love real opinions. What's the vibe like there? Are the rentals reasonable? Also, how's the transit access? Any safety concerns?
