Who can be a rental reference?

I'm applying for a rental in Toronto and feeling a bit lost on references. I’ve never rented before, so I don’t have a landlord to ask. Can I use my employer instead? What do landlords typically ask for? Any advice on getting a reference letter would be appreciated!
