Is 10 minutes too far from the subway?

I've been hunting for places to rent and keep hearing the '10-minute walk' rule tossed around. Honestly, is that too far? I hate the thought of being too far from the subway, but some neighborhoods are beautiful and make you want to consider it anyway.
