Need advice on finding rentals in The Beaches this winter

I'm looking to rent in The Beaches area as I start a new job in January. Is it realistic to find a decent one-bedroom for under $2300? Also, any thoughts on the safety of the area during winter? I've heard the neighborhood is beautiful but want to be sure it's safe at night.
