Is it normal for landlords to demand personal references?

I'm looking to rent in the Danforth area and just finished a viewing. The landlord requested several personal references, including one from my employer and one from a friend! Is this standard practice in Toronto? I’m a bit uncomfortable with it but I don't want to lose the apartment. Thoughts?
