Subletting Rights Confusion: What Can Landlords Really Do?

I'm really confused about my rights to sublet my apartment in Toronto. My landlord just denied my request, but isn't there a legal process for this? Plus, I've heard mixed things about using Airbnb or assigning my lease. What can they actually restrict? Help!
