Why is Toronto housing so expensive compared to other cities?

I just moved to Toronto and I'm honestly shocked by the prices here! How is it that rents in NYC can be cheaper than in Toronto? I mean, Vancouver housing is expensive too, but Toronto feels like it's on another level. Is there any justification for this craziness? Makes no sense!
