subletting rights question - confused tenant

I’m really confused about my subletting rights in Toronto. My landlord just denied my request to sublet but I heard they can't just say no without a valid reason. Are there specific legal processes I should follow? Also, what about Airbnb? I thought renting out the place was allowed in some cases.
