Why is Toronto housing so shockingly expensive?!

I can't believe how high rental prices are in Toronto! Compared to cities like NYC and even Vancouver, our housing is through the roof. How is it possible that rental prices here are steeper than in these major cities? It just makes no sense. What's driving this craziness?
