What's the deal with renting in Leslieville?

I've been eyeing Leslieville for a rental, but the deposit demands seem outrageous lately. Landlords are asking for first and last month's rent in addition to a pet deposit sometimes! Is this normal for the area? Also, how's the food scene there? Thinking it could be worth it!
