How do regular folks afford living in Toronto?

I'm genuinely confused about how anyone can afford to live in Toronto anymore. What kind of income is needed to make it work? It seems like only rich people can survive here now. I've even heard of landlords offering free rent—are things really that bad? How is anyone managing?
