Questioning Landlord’s Claims on Rent Control Validity

I’m hearing mixed messages from landlords about whether certain buildings are subject to rent control in Toronto. They claim some aren't, but how do we verify that? Shouldn't we check city databases or verify the building's age before taking their word for it?
