In-unit laundry confusion - what's typical?

I just signed a lease for a new apartment and I was surprised to find out that in-unit laundry isn’t included. Is it common for Toronto rentals to leave that out? Also, my landlord mentioned a shared gym but didn’t provide any details. Do most buildings have fitness centers available to residents?
