Is it normal for landlords to request post-dated cheques for the winter?

I recently signed a lease in Leslieville for a cozy one-bedroom at $2,500/month. My landlord wants post-dated cheques for every month of the lease, but I've never had that before. Is this standard practice, especially during the winter when heating costs can be high? Any advice would be appreciated!
